Thor, 2011

Once again another popular comic book has hit the theaters, this time featuring the hammer-toting Viking-esque Thor. Having known about Thor only by seeing comic book covers and the die hard child fan from the movie Adventures in Babysitting, I couldn’t really expect much from this film, only to see some very cool visual effects and learn a bit about the character that has become so popular within the last year.As with most movies, there were things that this movie really did well with and some that didn’t do so well. While the cinematography and special effects were amazing (most of them, at least), some of the lines ended up being cheesy, specifically with the overacting of Loki’s character (who was played by some guy I’ve never seen, and according to IMDB has been in nothing seen by anyone, ever). I liked that the film showcased a lot of the background story and showed the evolution of Thor’s character, though.  On the other hand, it could have developed Natalie Portman’s character a little bit more.I think the biggest shortcoming though was how much time it spent jumping around between the realms, it was a little bit jarring and meant that a lot of time had to be spent showing “oh hey we’re here now” instead of having a smooth-flowing movie.I guess overall I was happy with it, and don’t feel ripped off, but it can’t stand up next to the Iron Man or Batman films, since those have set the bar REALLY high as movies… but by comic book movie standards, it’s not bad. If you enjoy the run of the mill popcorn flick, you’ll probably like this.
